Excellent efforts in hurdles

With the taste of bacon and eggs still fresh in their mouths, mothers and fathers alike were holding their breath as their young athletes ran across the hurdles for the first time this year. It was a great effort by the runners over the 60, 80 and 100m course, with those who had made it to training earlier in the week, putting their new skills into practice. Hurdles are one the most challenging athletics events and it was pleasing to see both newcomers and experienced campaigners throw themselves fully into the fray. There were several tumbles as the morning progressed, this is the nature of the event, but each athlete rose, undaunted, to continue the race, making it to the end, heads held high, doing their mothers proud.

In other events, the 9 to 11 group will be sending us to check the record books this week, after the shot put saw several athletes put in excellent throws, with Lily Sainsbury, Grace Franke and Cohen Dittman being the stand outs. The older group threw their first javelins of the year. There were some fantastic throws by a number of athletes, though it hard to go past Howard McDonald. He told the coach before the season got started that javelin was his thing and a massive throw of 46.01m tells us it was no exaggeration. It will be exciting to see how far the jav will fly as the season progresses.

The IAAF Kid’s A’s group had a long jump focus both in their rotations and after. Continuing from what they had been doing at training, the first competed in a landing competition designed to teach them to land safely as well as jumping far. Putting this into practice in the pit afterwards, allowed them to demonstrate how these skills are readily transferred from the team and play base Kid’s A’s events, to traditional athletics.

As always, new members are always welcome. Club days start at 0900 on the PSHS oval.
