Athletes perform well in Whitsunday Pentathlon

MORE than 170 athletes from throughout North Queensland went head-to-head at Proserpine State High School for the Whitsunday Athletics Club Pentathlon on Saturday.


The single day event was open to all ages with athletes from Townsville, Bowen, Mackay, Slade Point, Sarina, Moranbah and North Mackay competing in five events to earn points for a podium finish.


Whitsunday Athletics Club member Jai Stanes performed well to finish third overall in the Boys 6 Year, coming first in long jump with a 2.07m jump. Tristan Sainsbury came third overall in the Boys 7 Year ahead of fellow Whitsunday athletes Brayth Ledger and Zachary Connell-Teakle with Lachlan Jensen and Kaide Chapman also finishing third in their respective age groups. Callam Ogilvie-Alcock was on fire in the Boys 10 Year finishing in second place with the second fastest time in the 100m sprints and his best result in long jump of 3.42m.


The girls performed extremely well with Heidi Moore taking out first place in the Girls 13 Year ahead of Allie Whitehead and Zoe Connell-Teakle. Also placing first overall in their respective age groups was Katie Campbell in the Girls 15 Year and Natisha Morsch-Ivey in Girls 16 Year.


Strathdickie resident Edward Evans was the oldest competitor at the age of 74 competing in the Men 31-75 Pentathlon Masters. His son Derrick Evans was competing alongside him in the division with his granddaughter Ella Evans, competing in her respective age group Girls 11 Year Pentathlon. "It's great to be active and we've been trying to have us all competing together for years so it has been a great day," the 74-year-old said.


In the masters division Stephen Jackson finished second overall and Sarah-Jane Teakle performed well to bring home third place.


Whitsunday Athletics Club president Judi Worrall said the event was a huge success and thanked the Proserpine Lions for donating their time to provide a barbeque lunch for the competitors.
