About Us

The Whitsunday Athletics Club was formed in the 1970's and welcomes members from the Whitsunday region. We are based in Proserpine and are fortunate to have a full 400m athletics track for training and competition. There are also facilities on-site for track and field training, including long jump, triple jump, high jump, hammer throw, discus, shot put and javelin. The Club is host to the annual Whitsunday Pentathlon, where competitors come from all over North Queensland and beyond to compete.

Kid's A's

Athletes aged 4 - 11 have the opportunity to participate in Kid's Athletics. Kid's A's involves running small teams through different engaging activities that allow the development of fine and gross motor skills, essential for their growth and development. Each week, the teams are mixed up so that athletes get to know one another and develop confidence in meeting and interacting with new people.

At the end of the Kid's A's session, currently being organised by Nick Sainsbury, athletes then have a rotation of activities that change week by week, to allow them to complete against their peers to find out their PB (personal best) and to discover where their strengths lie.

Juniors

Athletes aged from 7 - 11 can begin to transition out of the Kid's A's program and begin competing in a rotating roster of running, jumping and throwing events. Athletes and their parents can choose when they are ready to join this group of athletes. Each athlete is different, develops at different rates, and may have joined a bit later on.

Once an athlete joins the juniors, then they compete with their peers, while their times and distances are recorded. Although athletes may be participating together, the focus should always be on the athlete's personal best, (PB). Juniors train from 3.30pm - 4.15pm on a Wednesday afternoon at the club house on the Proserpine State High School oval during terms 2 and 3.

Seniors 12+ and Masters 30+

Athletes over the age of 12 train together and compete at club days on a four weekly rotational roster. Athletes in this age group are eligible to do all track and field events.

Activity 1.  Running

The track is an 8 lane, 400m grass  track. During the competition season, the track is fully marked and laned.

Activity 2. Jumping

Long jump and triple jump

The club can cater for both long and triple jump. We have two pits connected by a strip of tartan. Atheletes are required to wear shoes whilst jumping, and may wear spikes in these events.

High jump

We have high jump mats available with both the metal bar for club and competition days, and also the rubber one for training days.

Activity 3. Throwing

Shot put

There is a dedicated shot put circle, with shots available to use for all ages.

Discus

There is a dedicated discus circle, for athletes to hone their discus throwing skills.

Javelin

The club has a variety of different sized javelins to cater for every athlete's requirement.

Hammer throw

Hammer throw is not offered at the club, as we do not currently have a net for protection purposes.
