IT'S time to dust off the running shoes with Whitsunday Athletics set to host their sign on and trial day this weekend. The athletics club will officially launch its season on Sunday (April 27) at the Stanbury Street clubhouse in Proserpine from 9am. Athletes will have the opportunity to train weekly (Wednesday from 3.45pm) before contesting club days each Sunday (starting at 9am). The season runs for two school terms before concluding in September.

Membership includes an athletics bag, water bottle, hat, Athletics North Queensland (ANQ) membership and training from fully qualified International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) coaches.

Whitsunday Athletics' secretary Michelle Hughes said it was a convenient sport for locals. "Everything is here," she said. "There's no travelling unlike football or soccer but we do have the option for athletics events elsewhere. "It's a great fun sport to be able to run around and participate freely." "The club welcomes everyone with open arms so the more the merrier."

Hughes said the club's priority this year would be growth in the community, which has been difficult in the past due to the region's transient nature. "We're trying to get athletics to grow in the area," she explained. "Bowen, Emerald and Mackay have really big clubs but you don't see a lot of growth in our club because it's such a transient area."
