ATHLETICS
THE Whitsunday Athletics Club enjoyed the sunshine, when they met for their weekly club day last Sunday.
The athletes welcomed a few new faces as they ran through their week one schedule of many sprints and field events.
They finished the day with a sausage sizzle and a meeting regarding their 5th annual pentathlon, taking place this Saturday, July 28.
The response to the pentathlon has been fantastic so far and nominations have already exceeded last year's numbers, with more than 100 athletes set to compete.
This week's' Thursday training session will focus on the events for the pentathlon. Consisting of five events per athlete, the pentathlon includes 60m, 80m, 100m, 200m and 800m sprints, long jump, discus and shot put, for ages ranging from five-years to masters. There will be medallions and sponsorship bags awarded to all athletes and trophies awarded to the outstanding male and female in each age group.
If you would like to participate as a non-member you are welcome to register and compete in the event. The pentathlon has attracted clubs from Bowen, Emerald, Mackay, Moranbah, North Mackay, Rockhampton, Ross River, Slade Point, Townsville and their additional members from Hamilton Island, with officials travelling from Townsville for the day.
A full canteen will be available on the day as well as the Proserpine State High School's new coffee van.
