Athletes back on track and field

BETTER THAN THE REST: Whitsunday junior athletes Erin Hungerford, Sahra Donnelly and Katie Campbell who all excelled at the North Mackay Little Athletics Pentathlon last weekend.

JUNIOR competitors from Whitsunday Athletics Club took part in the North Mackay Little Athletics Pentathlon last Sunday.

Seven competitors attended the pentathlon in preparation for their own Whitsunday Pentathlon to be held in the region on Saturday, August 13.

All athletes performed extremely well in their events in North Mackay and brought home several trophies for their efforts.

All athletes showed plenty of commitment and effort to achieve top placings in their age groups.

Katie Campbell was crowned the under-14 girls age champion, competing well in the hurdles, long jump, javelin, 100m and 800m events.

Erin Hungerford also performed well in the U13s age group to bring home a trophy for third place overall.

Sahra Donnelly also won the trophy for third place in her age group in U9s.

The girls U11s competition saw Zoe Connell-Teackle finish in fourth spot overall after putting in a great throw for the shot put to finish second in that event.

Amy Hungerford worked consistently throughout her events to come fifth overall in the same age group.

Jack Wilson and Ethan Clegg were the boys representatives in the Whitsunday team and both boys were crowned age champions in their respective age groups.

Jack took out the boys U10s while Ethan took out the U11s.

The two young athletes excelled in their hurdles, long jump, 100m, shot put and 800m running events.

Riding on the back of last week’s success, the Whitsunday junior athletes are looking forward to competing in the Mackay Athletics Club’s Annual Invitational day on Saturday, July 23.

This day will see all age levels of athletes take the field for the events.

Also on the athletics front, Sahra Donnelly and Judi Worrall attended an Athletics North Queensland coaching clinic in Townsville last week.

The pair said it was a very worthwhile coaching clinic as they learnt new techniques and fitness in their throws.

WAC will train this afternoon at the Proserpine High School Oval before their club day on Sunday from 1.30pm.
